In addition to the consultations for the recently published Draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Languages

ACARA has called for discussion and feedback on the cross-curriculum priorities in the Australian Curriculum. ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures’ is one of three cross-curriculum priorities. Indigenous languages are the first point under the heading ‘Culture’ and are specifically mentioned as relevant to the English curriculum. Continue reading

Constitutional amendment to recognise Indigenous Australians

In November 2010 Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a proposal to establish an expert panel to consult on options for a constitutional amendment to recognise Indigenous Australians.

ESALG has contacted the Prime Minister to recommend that the expert panel advising on this matter includes at least one representative from an authoritative Indigenous languages organisation. Continue reading

Submission to the Indigenous Broadcasting and Media Sector Review

NSW Language Funding

Applications are being sought by the NSW Government from Aboriginal community organisations to revitalise and teach Aboriginal languages. $100,000 has been allocated for a small grants program (up to $5,000 per project) and $200,000 for larger one-off grants (up to $25,000). Continue reading
